Welcome to my Crazy Quilting world
        Peace Within A Garden
           By Lady Langham Rosamund

Silk ribbons I dyed for embellishing my work. With temptations like this, who has time for housework?
The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines Crazy Quilting as.....A disorderly mixture, a hodge podge.

Hmmm...sounds like fun to me!

There is peace within a garden
A peace so deep and calm
That when the heart is troubled
         It's like a soothing balm

There is life within a garden
A life that still goes on
Filling empty places
    Where older plants have gone

There is glory in a garden
       At every time of year
       Spring Summer Autumn Winter
To fill the heart with cheer

                            So ever tend your garden
It's beauty to increase
For in it you'll find solace
For in it you'll find peace

Welcome! My name is Pat Winter and I am a crazy quilt addict. I love to encrust fabric. I can fill every moment of each day working on a crazy quilt project of some sort. I am self taught using books for inspiration such as ,"Crazy Quilt Odyssey", "The Crazy Quilt Handbook", and "The Art of Silk Ribbon Embroidery", all by Judith Baker Montano.

I live near the Dunes in Chesterton Indiana where I have the opportunity to take frequent walks with my mother along the shores of Lake Michigan.

I have written for an online magazine dedicated to crazy quilters from 2003 to 2009. You may find it here.
As of October 1st 2009 I am opening my Summer kitchen to teach crazy quilt classes. Please email for additional  information.

I always find treasures such as sea glass (mermaid's tears), tiny smooth driftwood, and small shells which I collect to add to my quilt projects.

I add flowers to all of my work usually by way of silk ribbon embroidery.

Living in the Midwest , I am forced to spend several month indoors however I still enjoy the beauty Winter offers.
My other two favorite places to stitch are on the front porch swing with Angell, my little companion, and in my studio.
There's always a surprise in the garden no matter what time of year. This snow woman, "Prissy" is waiting to try out a new purse. She  was created and unfortunately melted during the Winter of 2007/08
The garden is put to rest for the Winter and my fingers are put to work on stitching instead of dirt.  After all.......Happy Hands make Happy Hearts.
The crazy quilt sample  below is the center of my award winning quilt,"Life Within A Garden", for the 2006 4th issue of the $100,000 Quilting Challenge contest.
More photos of the quilt below.
For this quilt I used my garden as inspiration and included several insects which you will find throughout the quilt.
Being a gardener,I frequently take my projects into the garden to work on. It not only provides a quiet secluded work area, but I am surrounded by inspiration from nature. Indiana weather really makes you appreciate the warmer months. Sometimes I am stuck indoors for 7 or 8 months a year. Books  and work from online friends help with inspiration during those "indoor" months, but there is nothing like sitting in the center of your garden or any special place outside to work.
You notice so many small elements such as insects climbing on a Hosta leaf or the deep yellow inside the deep purple making up the center of the pale lavender Iris,or a tender fern frond unfurling. Most importantly, I notice the many shades of green that make up a garden.
Have you noticed when you are in a garden your mind clears itself of stressful thoughts? Peace takes over and beauty is absorbed allowing no room for negative thoughts. I could be having the worse day and walk into my garden and immediately feel enlightened as I look around, pull a weed, make mental notes on what needs moved or added. I get energy from the garden as well. There is always something that needs tending and before you know it, the sun is going down and  hours have passed.
